Samsara

Samsara tattoo studio located 20 mintutes north of Coffs Harbour, in the chilled costal town of Corindi Beach.

Home to the talented artistry of:

Jamie Peculiar

This multi dimensional artist is the humble owner of  Samsara. Miss Peculiar was kind enough to invite me in for the weekend to do a guest spot. Her style is a mix of neo tradional and greywash realism, she is well known for her stunning feminine touch and well thought out designs. Jamie burst onto the scene many moons ago and began a plan to establish her brand and business as a high end boutique style studio, it was inspiring to meet such a dedicated artist who has worked tirelessly to achieve her dream. The studio sets a new benchmark for the region. Miss Peculiars passion for creating unique pieces of art carries through everlasting imagery, tailoring to those in search of original and thought provoking tattoos with a hint of magic.
Ash Gravino

Mr Gravino is nothing short of a wizard! Ash is well known in the tattoo industry as a legend in his own right. Always up for a challenge he is constantly evolving his style to meet his clients requests and his natural artist flair makes his work appear effortless. Ash is exceptionally talented at incorporating varied styles and techniques such as realism, surrealism, watercolour, geometric, traditional and portraiture. Some may recognise Ash from expos and conventions across Australia. He prides himself on customer satisfaction and will leave you wanting to book in for more! Samsara really is a dynamic studio where you can meet a friendly, hardworking family and find someone who can provide you with exactly what your looking for.

Amber Carbury

Amber is an absolute gem. She exudes a warm infectious energy which was a pleasure to be around. Miss Carbury began as and still is a phenomenal visual artist. Seamlessly transitioning into the tattoo industry under the insightful gaze of Miss Peculiar, Amber was Samsaras first apprentice. Although she hasn’t been in the game long she is definitely one to watch. With a steady following of dedicated clients who love her whimsical style which celebrates Mother Nature and all her beauty. Amber is multi talented and enjoys helping people along their journey though her meaningful gift. I had the pleasure of witnessing Amber transform an old piece the client wished to modify, as you know cover ups can prove challenging even for seasoned artists and Amber made it look so easy. If you’re looking for something truely unique I emplore you to check out what she’s producing.

Rachel Waddell

Rachel is the newest member of the Samsara family, currently apprenticing under Miss Peculiar. I enjoyed meeting this lovely young woman and was eager to help her on her tattoo journey so I offered my leg as her canvas. She is clearly a natural, producing a clean traditional rose. I also had the pleasure of tattooing a symbolic sternum piece on Rachel during my stay, which I’m looking forward to adding too. There’s no doubt in my mind that in no time, along with the wisdom and support of the Samsara family, she will bloom into a well sought out artist in her own right. It’s great to meet passionate and like minded individuals from all walks of life, seeing where they’ve come from and the direction they’ve chosen. I look forward to reading more about your journey through your artwork.

Overview

There really is so much more than what meets the eye when you come across a powerful team who have chosen to work in an industry which is still to this day somewhat taboo in society. It opened my eyes and warmed my heart to witness and experience first hand what we as individuals are doing as a collective in this new age of walking canvases. I look forward to catching up and working again with the awesome crew that is Samsara. Thank you for having me.

Rites of Passage

Well I was promised by Mel the event organiser that this years rites of passage was going tobe the best one ever……

Mel and her crew defiantly delivered that and more

To theme an expo – lettering legends , Was an amazing idea and that brought out some of the best lettering artists across the world, (we have some of the best right here in Australia just sayin haha)

I met Mel at the Sydney expo the month before, she welcomed me with passes into rites and a media pass so I could do my thing.
Massive shout out to her, it sucks it’s her last one, but I know we will continue to grow a positive friendship meeting through this amazing industry.
I got into Melb Saturday arvo, I wanted to capture more of the expo in the later hours when Tattooer’s were abit more relax and on the tail end of the work
I managed to snag a few good photos of artists having a laugh, and that what it’s all about, it’s a work convention technically, but when you love what you do it’s more like a big celebration of artwork and family getting together.
The Australian tattoo culture is growing exponentially and with that brings a vast variety of artists, all working in the own styles, you can get absoloutly anything you desire.

As a whole the expo was one of the best I’ve been to, I’m a big fan of lettering and found that having them theme rites , incouraged non script artists trying there hand at it.

I look forward to the next rites of passage and hopefully the new organisers will bring it like Mel and her crew have done for the last few years.

Australian Tattoo Expo

The Australian Tattoo Expo,

Was held in darling harbour over the weekend, the new venue, Showcased the fuel girls from the UK, Amazing acrobatics and fire shows.

World class artists, not only from Australia, But all over the world.

I set out on march 1st, to walk from Newcastle to Sydney for the expo, sleeping rough along the way and for the whole month to raise awareness for the homeless,

I met some characters along the way, And after walking over 120kms I made it

Stoked to see the new venue,

Special thank you to Mel, the event organiser Who gave me free passes for the expo and after party

It’s great to see someone passionate about building the expo into a brand and I look forward to future expos under her management.
I snapped alot of photos over the weekend

And there available on the INK DEVOTION Facebook page,
It’s great to see the tattoo culture thriving here in australia

One thing I will remind Tattoo artists,

You are your own brand

I noticed the more well followed artists at the convention, Use a simple logo with there name Something recognisable, So you know them straight away.

Photos of your tattoos on your banner, Out date pretty quick and changing banners and cards every expo, I find I get confused with who’s who. It’s all online now days so your booth should be directing Clients to social sites.
Overall I had a great weekend, met some awesome people
Looking forward to rites
Till then

2012 Tattoo Company

2012 Tattoo Company
across two locations
Broadmeadow and Charlestown square

The Broadmeadow shop is located at the nineways, a beautifully thought out space, Adorned with taxidermy animals, bugs and ancient artefacts

It’s a taste of a creative space, well thought out and executed even better.

The Charlestown shop is no exception, its hard to create a space that can slot right into a shopping centre, not be over done or tacky but also have a separate tattoo space from the front of house, and its been knocked out of the park, beautiful studio something to be very proud of.

With the biggest staff of tattoo artists I’ve ever written about it was hard to tee everyone up, as we all know what organising tattooers is like, however at 2012 they are all a great bunch of people, which stems back to there boss Pat, an amazing colour and black & grey realism artist, that can nail anything, Supported by his wife Emma and his children,

Pats employees speak so highly of him, holding art nights regularly to expand his apprentices skills, where he shouts them dinner every time

it seems more like a big family, and in the tattoo industry, family is a must.

Matt – Totally chilled dude, we get along like a house on fire, and my first contact getting me into meet the crew at 2012, Matts style is a mix of neotrad influenced with a his own new school twist, Matt melds them together to create one of a kind grey or colour pieces I’d be proud to wear.

Kit – A Reclusive Tattooer who prides himself in large Japanese work, giving a one on one experience to his clients, from the old school and someone I hold in the highest respect, Kit was abit weary of me, Walking in todo the blog but after 5 minutes chatting you could tell he could see where I was coming from, and the conversation flowed, I look forward to chatting more to someone who’s seen the tattoo industry go from the underground to the mainstream.

John – formerly a school teacher, turning tattoo artist, John specialises in fine line blackwork tattoos, heavily influenced by that European style, clean black lines and whipped out shading, one of my favourite styles and he nails this perfectly.

Estelle – absolutely delightful chatting to this girl, Estelle is cheery, friendly and brings the energy up, beautifully achieving dot work mandalas, neo traditional/realistic stylised tattoos, I will be saving some space to get a tattoo off this one that’s for sure.

Seb – Super smooth black & grey relistic artist,Who has pops of colour realism every so often, I wish he’d do more of this, as his colour work is as clean and presise and his greywash, Totally underrated and one to watch in the next few years.

Bella – A wonderful personality, Bella brings a great vibe to 2012, Doing amazing work, black & grey or colour, it doesn’t matter, I hate calling artists – Tattooer’s but Tattooer’s do it all and that’s what Bella can do, and do it with skill, Bella’s peers can learn alot just from watching her.

Shannon – influenced from a comic book style, hand drawing artwork, following traditional lines but making it his own, keen to see where he goes from here, both in his tattooing and comic illustrations.

Maddi – Manager, and cosmetic tattoo artist, Maddi is the glue that holds the artists together, while answering the phone and seeing to the day to day operations,

Such a big job organising Tattooer’s and she’s killing it.!

Barry – home on his motorbike or jamming on his guitar, right away you get that old school rocker Tattooer vibe, Doing some really nice traditional work, Barry’s a down to earth, top bloke and someone you just wanna be around.

Cassie – A young graphic stylised artist, who can create masterpieces via the iPad Pro in a matter of minutes, designing fun colourful tattoos, that you can’t help your from smiling over, a wizard on the iPad.
Nikki – Resident laser tattoo removal artist, Removing those unwanted tattoos to make room for some amazing pieces done in house at 2012

All and all, I was welcomed into the 2012 tattoo company and will continue to grow my relationship with the crew, as we all are in the same profession and my aim is to build everyone up and show case the artists here

The boss is refelected in his team, and they all are a bunch of kind hearted people who I want to see do well, not only in this industry but In life

Well done Pat and Emma

You should be proud of the tattoo family you have created and the beautiful environment to get your everlasting artwork.

I’ve missed a few people since my last visit, but plan to come back and meet the rest of the crew.

FORBIDDEN INK

Forbidden Ink opened the 5th of January 2015, Started by award winning artists Joel Speelman and Jay Jones

Joel and Jay started at crossroads tattoo, before both making there way to impact tattoos
where there craft progressed as did there friendship
when the licencing laws came in they decided to open there own studio in Toronto.

Tragically Jay lost his life in a boating accident, before getting to enjoy the fruits of his labour, however his spirit is definitely felt in the shop, a portrait drawing up in the corner of Joel’s workspace, looks over the studio.
i wasn’t lucky enough to meet Jay, but you can tell the lives he touched by the tattoos on some of his closest friends, wearing proud there ‘jay fish’ tattoos, on hands, necks and heads.

Forbidden ink  is a open plan space, clean and classy, well laid out with a lot of room to sit on the couches and enjoy the vibe.

I first met Joel in march 2013, at the Sydney body art expo , at that time i didn’t know how good Joel was, id never seen tattooing done up close that good, he did a rose on a young lady’s neck a walk up and boy was it good, the water droplets i remember thinking ..fuck this bloke can tattoo …
meeting Joel on the Friday it wasn’t long before Sunday we were drinking beers and having a good laugh, heading out together with a few other awesome tattooers, this was the first time id been in the lifestyle, where people just accepted you, no judgemental stares or glares,
it wasn’t long before the crew from the expo started having dinners and karaoke
where Joel was always the life of the party.

Joel’s been in the industry 10 years, his tattooing style is a mix of black & grey realism, portraiture style
However I’ve seen him do abit of everything and do it exceptional
Joel’s doing some of the best faces I’ve ever seen in black and grey ,if your looking for a day of the dead girl ,this is your man

when chef Speelman’s not in the studio he’s often near the grill ,smoking and spit roasting alot of different meats, Making the world jealous via his Instagram videos.

joels is sponsored by oztat skincare, ron meyers greywash, inkjecta and ink ammunition

Nicole Pavitt and Shelli Mae, are the two young ladies in the shop
but don’t let there smiles and light hearted personality’s fool you , these girls are hard workers and can tattoo beyond there years,

Nicole does alot of neo trad tattooing but has been taking on more dotwork style tattoos, if you’ve ever done dotwork you know how easy it is to go on auto pilot but hers are clean and precise, you can tell Nicole pays attention to what she’s doing, and the result is some very beautiful tattooing
apprenticing at 2012 to olde English where her skills excelled surrounding herself with Siarn Engels, another very skilled young tattooer.

Shelli another girl emerging from 2012, Shelli seems like a shy girl -hates having her photo taken , i really think once she finishes blacking out her arm it will boost her confidence, but her tattooing is really good, mastering the digital artworks, Shelli is always putting up exciting new designs i wish i had the space for,
Going from bright colour to even doing a fine line illustrative style skull on her own calf -if you’ve ever tattooed yourself you know how hard that spot is to get to, and she killed it.

both theses girls are ones to watch, the environment there in will only enhance there skills and Joel will push them to work hard and do clean consistent
tattoos

Kevin Maxwell aka kit tattoos
coming from honey ink
kits works in a private room at forbidden ink
it reminds me of my little studio,
a well thought out space with a TV to help keep the clients occupied, while he zones into his work wearing headphones to drown out distractions, so he can achieve his best possible work,
Kit has been doing some really nice black and grey realism lately but his colour portrait style stuff is also bright and vibrant.

overall the vibe at forbidden ink is a good one, approachable clean and casual, if your getting tattooed here your walking out with a piece of artwork and a story to tell.

i look forward to spending more time at forbidden ink what a great environment
